Job interviews during the summer time can be stressful. Just as going for jobs in the winter months requires careful planning, summer interviews come with their own host of challenges.

Wondering what to wear to a job interview this summer? Need some advice for keeping cool? Here are some summer interview tips to help you succeed and be as cool as a cucumber:

Dress for the heat

Job interview outfits can be tricky at the best at times, but the best advice is: be smart when choosing fabrics and colours. Cotton is a great option for breathable summer interviews and light colours will keep you cooler as well.

If you’re wearing a traditional business suit, put your jacket on just before entering the building.

Let your skin breathe

Regardless of the season, wearing a lot of perfume or aftershave to an interview is never a good idea. You should scale it back even more during the summer months, as your body heat will only increase the scent further.

Be mindful of what you put on your skin, too. Avoid heavy lotions and cosmetics that could run if you get hot. If you wear makeup, consider applying it in your air-conditioned area or a bathroom, right before your interview.

Pack a bag

Pack a small bag with the following items:

  • Travel-sized deodorant
  • Handkerchief
  • Cleansing wipes
  • A hair band (if you have long hair)
  • Dental floss
  • Mints or chewing gum

Plan & prepare for the weather being hot!

The more you prepare for your interview, the more confident you will feel. The more confident you feel, the less likely you will be to break a sweat.

There will always be things you can’t control, but you can:

  • Check the forecast: Depending on where you live, summer temperatures could fluctuate significantly from day to day.
  • Arrive early, so you’re not rushing to the door! This will only make you flustered.
  • Research nearby parking options in advance, to avoid a long walk in the sun.
  • Bring a bottle of water to cool you down during your commute.

Absolutely no flip flops!

During the summer months, your feet can become hot. However, as tempting as it is to wear flip flops, don’t!
